MISTRESSES’ LUNCHEON
In October, the then Master Keith Garrard organised a highly memorable and symbolic lunch in the boardroom of Metzendorff & Co’s London offices overlooking the Thames for the annual passing of the Mistress’s badge from his wife, Ailsa, to Tina Plant. During her speech, Ailsa mentioned that on numerous occasions her badge had been the talking point and that it had attracted many favourable comments. Those present at the Ladies’ Banquet at the Guildhall back in September will recall her fabulous and eye catching evening dress gown and her stunning hair arrangement. Our Livery has been fortunate in the high level of support that successive Masters have received from their ladies and Ailsa was no exception. Her warmth and own individual style will be well remembered by all those who met her during Keith’s active and hugely successful year – we are all greatly indebted to her. The following Wardens were also appointed to serve during the ensuing year: Upper Warden: Charles Maxwell Middle Warden: Simon Leschallas Renter Warden: David Sills
INSTALLATION COURT AND LIVERY DINNER
At the November Court meeting, Derek Plant was installed as Master in front of members of the Livery who were invited into the Court Room to watch the installation ceremony together with Derek’s wife, Tina, and other members of their family. It was only the sixth time, in recent times, that this ancient ceremony has been witnessed by non-members of the Court. 2. David Sills, Charles Maxwell, The Master, and Simon Leschallas At the same Court meeting, the Company was honoured with the presence of HE Sr Rafael Moreno, the Chilean Ambassador who was granted the honorary freedom of the Company – in addition to demonstrating the close and historical ties which exist between the United Kingdom and Chile, this highlights the significance of the two

countries’ ever increasing commercial relationships. Following a most excellent dinner of Vodka Cured Trout, Braised Breasts of Partridge, Poached Pear in Cahors Wine and Vanilla Ice Cream accompanied by a selection of fine wines and spirits from the Master’s own extensive cellar, we were entertained by Past Master, Charles Minoprio who lived up to his well earned reputation of oral dexterity by proposing the toast to the guests – the response on behalf of the guests was given by Nicholas Carlton, one of the Master’s sons-in-law and Finance Director of the hotel group which the Master had co-founded some 25 years earlier. In his response, the Master paid a warm and richly deserved tribute to Immediate Past Master Keith Garrard and in so doing; he reflected on the many achievements of the past year and outlined his own objectives for his term of office. What a delightful and highly memorable evening, the standards set on this particular occasion augured well for The Master’s year of office.
THE MASTERS REPORT
The pleasure and honour of being Master of our Livery Company is something that one never forgets: the experience will be with me for the rest of my life. Our Livery Company is in good shape. The changes which I had wished to implement during my term of office continue to evolve and move forward. I believe to a great extent that this evolution will be self-perpetuating as younger men and women take the livery - it will be these members who will seek change which will be in keeping with the requirements of modern society. I am most grateful for all the enthusiastic support which I have received over the months for our Special Events. These started with the Ladies’ lunch and Tequila tasting in February and followed subsequently by the visit to the Clockmakers’ Museum in May – all turned out to be popular and were fully subscribed to. Our new Liverymen’s Evening held in March at the Caledonian Club proved, as in the past, to be a great success. This event provided an ideal opportunity for our more recently elected Liverymen to meet each other and Members of the Court in a relaxed and informal manner. If they did not already exist, it is at times like this that the seeds of friendship are sown.
I should like to ask you for your help and support for our very first Livery Charity Dinner which I and the Wardens are organising at the Caledonian Club on Monday, 20th October. This event will take the form of a dinner and an auction. We have already pulled together a carefully selected number of items for the auction which are in the “Money can’t buy category”. For this event, we have joined forces with the Earl Haig Fund Scotland, known 4. Charles Maxwell, Upper Warden, in full flow as he as Poppy Scotland – last addresses the new Liveryyear they raised some £1.7m men’s Evening at the north of the border. All profCaledonian Club. its from this evening will be divided equally between the Distillers’ Charity Fund and Poppy Scotland. As sales of tickets are going well and in order to avoid disappointment, I would suggest that you return your completed application forms as soon as possible. The very warm welcome that I have received from other Masters at the various functions has been delightful. I suspect that I shall not get used to being called Master until the autumn - and by then, it will be Charles’s turn! Life as Master can be a busy one and this is reflected in my diary appointments which, since the Installation Dinner in November, have been:2007 14 19 20 21 27 28 04 05 11 13 NOVEMBER Installation Dinner Maltmen Annual Dinner, Glasgow Weavers’ Company Lecture Festival of St Cecilia Lord Mayor’s 800th Anniversary Awards Trust Court of City University Meeting DECEMBER Fairtrade in the City: Celebration Event Wine and Spirit Committee Briefing: Mansion House Carol Service: City of London School for Boys

CAROL SERVICE AND SUPPER
In line with tradition, the Annual Carol Service was held at St Lawrence Jewry on Wednesday, 19 December. The service was taken by the Company’s Honorary Chaplain, the Revd Preb David Burgess. This was followed by an excellent supper at the Innholders. The evening began with a Champagne reception in the church entrance lobby and over time, the Carol Service has become one of the highlights of the Company’s year which is reflected in the ever increasing numbers in the congregation. The original St Lawrence Jewry was built in the 12th century and was destroyed by the Great Fire and was subsequently rebuilt by Wren (1670 – 1687). However it suffered extensive damage during the Blitz and was only fully restored in 1957 – no longer a “parish church”, it is a “guild church” and is the “official church” of the Corporation of the City of London.

WINE AND SPIRIT EDUCATIONAL TRUST (WSET)
The WSET which was founded in 1969 has become the foremost international institute in the field of wines and spirits education. At the end of the 2007/2008 academic year, a record number of students (24321 – 45% UK based and 55% international) had taken a WSET qualification in one of the 41 countries where the WSET is recognised; this was only the second year that the number of international candidates had exceeded those taking courses in the UK. The WSET runs six separate programmes including the Higher Certificate, the Foundation Certificate in Wine and the Professional Certificate in Spirits – since it was launched in 2004, nearly 1000 students have completed the latter course and in order to cater for the enthusiasts and especially members of our Company who are based in London, the next evening course will run from 20 January through 17 March 2009. The cost including all samples is £301.50 and is extended to all our Liverymen, their friends, family and colleagues. Full course details are available from the WSET Student Services (Tel: 020 7089 3800 – email: school@wset.co.uk) and when making enquiries, please refer to the “Distillers”.

THE TEQUILA TASTING On Monday, 18 February and at yet another oversubscribed event, those lucky Liverymen and their guests present had the opportunity to gain an insight into the history, the traditions and the distilling process of Mexico’s foremost spirit, Tequila – everyone’s enjoyment was further enhanced by the expertise of Diageo’s “mixologist” who prepared Cuervo Margaritas and a Cuervo Surprise cocktail – no wonder why Tequila has gained such a fine reputation in recent years among the younger and not so young cognoscenti around the world! Entitled “An Introduction to Tequila – the Spirit of Mexico”, we are greatly indebted to Chris Nadin, fellow Liveryman and former International Brand Director Tequila Diageo for being the catalyst and for leading this tutored tasting together with Mark Barrett, Diageo’s Brand Ambassador and to Diageo for their generosity in supplying the Cuervo Tequila. On this occasion we were delighted that HE Sr Juan Jose Bremer, the Mexican Ambassador, was able to be present and to comment on the positive state of the Anglo Mexican bi-lateral relationship and the importance of the UK as a growing market for Tequila together with many other traditional and non-traditional products. Everyone present agreed that these events present a first class showcase for national and international categories of spirits alike to present their products to fellow liverymen and guests in a highly receptive environment! (For the record, the Editor much regrets that there are no photos of this particular event available – the snapper’s camera was regrettably and subsequently nicked!)

FEBRUARY COURT AND EDUCATION AWARDS Following the high culinary standard which the Master had set at the Court and Installation Dinner in November, he had organised yet another excellent feast which this time consisted of Smoked Haddock Chowder, followed by Roast Beef and then by Treacle Tart – these were accompanied by Chablis 1er Cru, Fourchaume Bessin 2002; Beaune 1er Cru, Clos de Roi Chanson 2002 and followed by a choice of either Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas 1991 or Metzendorff Kummel. The toast to the Guests was proposed by Past Master Nigel Strofton who gave a thoughtful speech which was well received by all those present. On this occasion, the response on behalf of the guests was given by the Master’s guest, Alan Mole, who mentioned a number of amusing anecdotes about the Master and went on to record his deep appreciation to the Master and Company for their kind and generous hospitality. The Master referred to the activities of the Wine and Spirit Educational Trust (WSET), their relationship with the Company and the development of the Distillers’ Room at the Trust’s headquarters in London. As is customary at the Court and Livery February Lunch, the Master presented the Company of Distillers’ Scholarships as follows: 1. Ian McLaren – for the Wine and Spirit Education Trust’s Professional Certificate in Spirits. 2. Jack Chaddock – for the Wine and Spirit Education Trust’s Diploma 3. Simon Connell – for the MSc/Post-Graduate Diploma in Brewing and Distilling of Heriot-Watt International Centre for Brewing and Distilling. THE LADIES’ LUNCHEON Following last year’s first Ladies’ luncheon and having established it as an annual event, it was the turn of the Master’s wife, Tina, to host the second luncheon in the Gassiot Room at the Vintners. Run concurrently with the February Livery luncheon, it was open to all the Court and Livery wives or escorts. It was well supported and voted a great success by all those present. (Editor’s Note: Next year, could we have a photo?) THE COURT’S VISIT TO PARIS IN THE SPRINGTIME To anybody aware of The Master’s love of France, it came as no surprise that he and Tina proposed a day trip to Paris in the Spring, and so it was that twenty three members of the Court Livery and guests prepared themselves for the great day by rehearsing the well known Frank Sinatra lyrics. There was much anticipation and infectious good humour as guests gathered at St Pancras to board Eurostar and immediately the first decision of the day had to be made, namely at what stage in the journey was it reasonable for Distillers to be seen opening their well chilled bottles of Champagne. For many it seemed reasonable to wait until just after 09h.00 UK time when Eurostar’s wheels touched French rails. However others were drawn “sous la Manche” and bubbles were enjoyed with a variety of well prepared “saumon fumé” sandwiches and other nibbles. The

jolly mood was therefore set at an early stage and was to continue throughout. On arrival at Gare du Nord we were whisked by coach to the World famous Brasserie Bofinger where a relaxed French lunch was enjoyed in the most convivial of surrounds with copious quantities of wines from Alsace and the Loire. Before adjourning for an informal afternoon of variously boating on the Seine or exploring the delights of bars and bistros, IPM Keith Garrard “gave a grand merci to zee Maitre and ees Mistress for ‘aving ‘ad zee idea and taking zee initiative in organising un jour zat was improving a wunderbar success”.
On this occasion, one of the Master’s nephews, Mr Jeremy Wall replied on behalf of the guests. Under his entry in “Who’s Who”, Mr Wall lists, among his leisure interests, keeping Derek on the straight and narrow. In his speech he shared with the assembled company a number of family stories and, at the same time, giving an honest appraisal of The Master’s career which had taken him to the top of his career in the hotel industry. In his response, the Master highlighted a number of the Company’s diverse activities including the forthcoming Livery Charity Dinner which is to be held on Monday, 20th October at the Caledonian Club - this is a new initiative and one which he hopes will receive maximum support from the Livery. HMS MONTROSE Through the good offices of Court Assistant David Raines, the Company has maintained its close relationship with HMS Montrose which after an extensive maintenance period over the Christmas break departed a wet and windswept Plymouth on 12 March for the long journey east to the Gulf area of operation. With the LnyxMK8 helicopter rejoining the ship, she then headed into the remains of the hurricane force winds which had battered the UK for the previous two days and soon after entering open seas, the weather deteriorated even further as they crossed the infamous Bay of Biscay. Fortunately this was short lasting as she progressed into the warmer climes and calmer seas off the coast of Portugal and into the Mediterranean. Operations permitting and with the arrival of better weather brought the opening event of the Distillers’ Trophy – a deck hockey competition on the flight deck. The teams of five players from individual Messes fought hard to set the tempo for this Trophy competition – at the end of July, it was reported that the wardroom were in the lead. On her arrival on station in the Gulf of Oman and by engaging with local communities, HMS Montrose’s Company were able to contribute towards the vital diplomacy role which the Royal Navy performs so well in various parts of the globe. At the same time, they were able to make

All too soon we had regrouped at Gare du Nord for the return trip, some having eaten, and some clearly more modestly than others, and the uneventful trip to St Pancras brought another memorable day in the Distillers’ life to a close. Well done indeed, and many thanks to the Master and Tina on behalf of all who were there! APRIL COURT AND LIVERY DINNER After a further one of the Master’s culinary treats which was washed down by Montagny 1er Cru, La Grande Roche 2002, Louis Latour; Chateau La Croix de Gay, Pomerol 1999; Viu Manent Semillon 2005; Cockburns 1991 and Dupeyron; Past Master Tim Morrison acquitted himself with distinction when proposing the toast to the guests who included:- Dr Bill Watson, Master of the Glass Sellers; Commander Hugh Evans, Master of the Innholders and Mr Neville Watson, Clerk of the Scientific Instrument Makers.

the ship’s presence felt by reassuring all merchant ships that they were there to protect their important sea lanes and to identify any illegal activities which may be linked to wider terrorist activities. Along with the patrols undertaken jointly with their helicopter, they were also able to contribute to the reduction of the activities of pirate gangs.

Following HM Montrose’s Commanding Officer’s invitation, a number of Liverymen will be joining the ship for part of her return voyage from Malta to Alicante – it is hoped that a brief report and photographs will appear in the next edition of the Distillate. On her return to the UK, the Commanding Officer has kindly offered to update the Company on his ship’s recent deployment – this will take place on Wednesday, 17 December at the Brewers’ Hall and just prior to the Annual Carol Service on the same day. Any liverymen wishing to follow HMS Montrose’s progress can do so by visiting:

Friday 19 June when it is hoped to have a field of over twenty players. The complete fixture card for 2009 will be published in the next edition of the Distillate together with reports covering the recent match against the Brewers and the Distillers’ Scottish Golf Day which Brian Morrison (Tel: 01292 311 or 0771 0088446) has organised for Tuesday, 07 October at Prestwick Golf Club followed by dinner at the Lochgreen Hotel, near Troon – this is the day after the Keepers’ of the Quaich dinner at Blair Castle. For an update why not call Brian? COMPANY TIES The two current designs which are considered “a must” by “the cognoscente” are proving to be highly popular and much admired by Liverymen and non-liverymen alike. The “City tie” is dark blue with Cambridge blue diagonal stripes with the company’s crest at the bottom designed for City use. The other is regarded as the company’s “Country and Sporting tie” which is particularly striking with Cambridge blue and yellow diagonal stripes, again with the company’s crest at the bottom. These can be purchased from The Clerk at a cost of £20 each or £30 for the two! All profits go to the Company’s charity fund. INTRODUCING OUR NEW ASSISTANT CLERK At the February Court meeting, Mr Edward Macey-Dare was appointed Assistant Clerk to the Distillers Company. A fellow partner of Mr Chris Hughes in the law firm of Lee Bolton Monier-Williams (LBMW), he will succeed Chris in February 2009 when he retires after 19 years as Assistant Clerk (1989 to 1991) and then Clerk (1991 to present). Edward was educated at Stonyhurst, Durham University and the College of Law, Guildford. He specialises in Employment and Commercial Litigation, acting for clients in the City of London and also within the wine and spirits sector (particularly, the Wine and Trades Benevolent Society and the Wine and Spirit Education Trust). Edward is also a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Scriveners. We would take this opportunity to wish Edward every success in his new appointment along with Kim Lyons who has joined the Company as the Clerk’s Secretary and Company Bookkeeper.
GOLFING SECTION The Golfing Society has had yet another highly enjoyable season which opened on Wednesday, 26 March at Royal Wimbledon with their regular fixture against the Worshipful Company of Vintners. The day saw some splendid matches for the 23 players who had battled with burst sewage pipes on the A3 and major works on the Clubhouse requiring them to change in a dolls house sized port-a-cabin. As a result of some canny pairing and in a remarkable match of shifting fortunes, saw the Society victorious by the odd game which resulted in redeeming themselves following last year’s defeat – to cap it all and through an admin error on their part, the Vintners agreed to fund next year’s lunch wines again!!! The next meeting was the Prince Arthur Cup Inter Livery Golf Competition at Walton Heath which turned out to be another storming year for the Distillers. A highly creditable 14th place among the 54 Livery Companies put them ahead of all fellow Cask Group Companies! Many thanks in particular to Michael Campbell, Graham Franklin and George Bull – it is not an easy event and they should be very pleased with their efforts. This year’s Distillers’ Annual Golf Day was held on Friday, 20 June at West Kent. After a few late withdrawals, 15 Golfers competed for the Budge Brooks Shield on a well chosen day ahead of the Club Captain’s day, with the green staff ensuring the course was in prime condition. All the players enjoyed a very pleasant 18 holes of golf during which they were served with a “Distillers’ Cocktail (at the 12th hole) created by the Golf Club Manager with a seal of approval from Robert Hobson, our resident West Kent Club member. At lunch the players were joined by Ian Beith, Ian Coombes and Gordon Law who are all local members of the WKGC and by the Master who presented the prizes. The team prize with the highest combined score (103 points) was awarded to Robert Howell and his team of John Giggins (a guest) and George Bull who each received a bottle of organic Gin generously donated by Chris Parker. Prizes were also available for the nearest to the pin on the three short holes. Until George Ball crept closer at the 16th, Ian Harris with his favoured six iron had dominated the proceeding at all of them. After IPM Keith Garrard had proposed a toast to him, the Master then presented the Budge Brooks Shield to George Bull who won with the impressive score of 38 points, one ahead of runner up Paul Varney with 37 points and with Ian Harris in 3rd place with 34 points. Next year’s event will take place again at West Kent on

Full course details are available from the WSET Student Services (Tel: 020 7089 3800 – email: school@wset.co.uk) and when making enquiries, please refer to the “Distillers”.

which for the first time was held at Guildhall on Monday, 21 January. In front of a capacity audience which included many overseas graduates, the prizes were presented by Past Master Michael Broadbent MW who was joined on the platform by the Master who presented the Distillers’ award to Ian McLaren.
