INSTALLATION DINNER At the Court meeting on Wednesday 15 November 2006 Mr Grant Gordon and Mr Kenneth Mackay were appointed to the office of Assistant and took their place at the Court meeting.
th
At the same ceremony the new Wardens were appointed: Upper Warden Middle Warden Renter Warden Derek Plant Charles Maxwell Simon Leschallas
The now Immediate Past Master David Grant congratulates Mr Grant Gordon and Mr Kenneth MacKay upon being appointed Assistants to the Court. The new Master Keith Garrard was installed in front of members of the Livery who were invited into the Courtroom to watch the installation ceremony. Keith’s wife Ailsa and sons Richard and Steven together with their wives watched the ancient ceremony. Renter Warden Mr Simon Leschallas, Upper Warden Mr Derek Plant and Middle Warden Mr Charles Maxwell with the Master. Following an excellent dinner accompanied by fine wines, Past Master Bob Howell proposed the health of our guests referring to the Master’s early business career in the wine trade with his father’s company. The response by the Master’s guest, Mr Philip Coulson was amusing and he thanked the Livery for their excellent hospitality. In reply the Master thanked the assembled company for their support and mentioned that out of 146 diners there were a record number of liverymen attending. He then paid a tribute to the now Immediate Past Master David Grant for being so heavily involved with the Livery during his year and initiating a number of new events for members to attend. We were delighted to be able to welcome as guests Commander Anthony Watt OBE and Lt Commander Paddy Parvin from HMS Montrose and His Excellency The Ambassador of Chile, Senor Rafael Moreno.
The Garrard family after Keith has been installed as our Master
Other guests included Mr Anthony Usher Master of The Upholders’ Company, Mr Nicholas Charrington Master of the Broderers’ Company and Mr Phillip Saunderson Master of the Patternmakers’ Company. MISTRESSES LUNCHEON In October the then Master David Grant arranged a private lunch in the splendid oval room of his club, Brooks in St James, as the venue for the annual passing of the Mistress’s badge from his wife Laragh to Ailsa Garrard. Laragh confirmed that the badge had been much admired during her term of office. Ailsa reflected that Laragh had worn it with great distinction and that we all were most grateful for the support she had given to both the Master and the Company during David's very successful year. In the streets of London there was a record turnout of over 500,000 people and additionally television provided coverage to many millions watching at home and abroad. The Lord Mayor pointed out that the Show is a good opportunity to “showcase” the Livery and the City, that it is international based and that we care for schools, community projects and our armed forces. The Lord Mayor, during his year, will be promoting the UK as the place to come to for a business education and a professional training, under the banner “City of London – City of Learning”. His charitable theme follows the same route, promoting the concept that if skilled people spend time abroad educating others, both will benefit. He will also support three other charities: Mansion House Scholarship Scheme, which brings carefully targeted foreigners to London for business experience Guild of Educators who will promote cross-border learning and also administer the livery-schools link designed to strengthen and deepen the links between your Company and schools in the capital King Edward’s School, Witley for bursary funding for poor pupils from overseas and for pupils to work on overseas community projects.

David and Laragh Grant with Ailsa and Keith Garrard after the presentation of the Mistress’s badge. LORD MAYOR’S SHOW On Saturday 11 November the Rt. Hon The Lord Mayor of London, Alderman John Stuttard addressed members of the Livery Companies and advised he had three separate responsibilities, namely: The promoter of the ‘Business City’ The head of the City of London Corporation, and of course A significant involvement with the Livery. The Lord Mayor was born in Lancashire, where his father was a chartered accountant. He is a Court Assistant of three companies, namely the Glaziers, Chartered Accountants and Plumbers.

LONDON REGIMENT The London Scottish, with whom the Distillers have long had an association, is now part of The London Regiment. Their Somme Company, which includes some twenty soldiers from the London Scottish, have recently been deployed to Afghanistan.
The Master in discussion with Stephen Henwood, Colonel of the London Scottish The Master, together with representatives of seven other Livery Companies having similar affiliations, and employers of the Territorial Reservists were invited to Hythe ranges on the Kent coast, to witness a series of exercises that included a shooting training package. The Master was particularly impressed with the professionalism of soldiers of all ranks and ages and the fact that regulars and reservists were working together as one.
The Lord Mayor, Alderman John Stuttard Referring to The Lord Mayor’s Show, he reminded liverymen of its international flavour, reflecting the status of the City of London. There were entries from China, Hong Kong, Holland, Germany and Switzerland. Finland produced the first ever State Visit to the UK of the real Father Christmas. Because of the growing business relationship between the City and Kazakhstan, ten fierce Kazak warriors and women on horseback also took part.
The Master with members of the London Scottish Regiment, who have now been deployed to Afghanistan as part of the Somme Company of the London Regiment FEBRUARY LUNCHEON AND EDUCATION AWARDS Following the heaviest snowfall for 11 years most livery members and their guests arrived at Vintners’ Hall on Thursday th 8 February 2007 for our annual luncheon. Assistant Mr Terry Barr welcomed the guests and spoke informatively regarding the Master’s guests coupled with their common passion for cricket and golf.
The Master with our three Scholars, Mr Abhishek Banik, Mr Simon Clarke and Mr Barry Johnstone The Master’s other guests were Alderman John Hughesdon Master of the Coopers’ Company, Major Steve Marcham the Beadle of the Vintners’ Company and Mr Roger Mitchell Past Master of the Gunmakers’ Company. THE LADIES LUNCHEON A tentative idea from the Master that transformed into what proved to be a very successful and enjoyable first ever Ladies luncheon was held in the Gassiot Room at Vintners’ Hall, concurrent with the February Livery luncheon.
Mr Terry Barr proposing the health of our Guests The Master’s principal guest Mr Richard Winter responded. Richard, a lawyer by training and a former head of Group Legal, is now Intercontinental Hotels Group Executive Vice President Corporate Services as well as their Company Secretary. The Master’s thanked all those who had braved the adverse weather conditions. He asked liverymen to support this year’s functions together with the variety of innovative events, especially those held in the Distillers’ Room at the Wine and Spirit Education Trust. The Master explained that over 500 students had now attended our spirits education course and that all liverymen should be proud of this achievement. He thanked all those who had supported this education initiative. The Master presented the Distillers scholarships to Mr Barry Johnstone with the Wine and Spirit Education Trust’s Professional Certificate in Spirits and Simon Clarke with the Wine and Spirit Education Trust’s Diploma. Mr Abhishek Banik from the Heriot-Watt International Centre for Brewing and Distilling received the MSc Post Graduate Diploma in brewing and distilling.
Mrs Alice Churton and Mrs Hilary Pearson at the Ladies reception with the Master’s wife Mrs Ailsa Garrard The luncheon, which was open to all Court and Livery wives or escorts, was very well supported. Twenty-seven ladies assembled in reception whilst the Court were still in deep deliberation, prior to being led on a tour of Vintners’ Hall by their knowledgeable Beadle, Major Steve Marcham Steve was to prove to be an amusing and well-informed guide as the whole Hall came alive as he made the ladies aware of its history and its many treasures. They were to learn about the swans, the shroud, and the ghost and viewed the fabulous collection of fine and rare wines stored in the labyrinth of cellars.
The Hon Mrs Kate Churton with Mrs Pauleen Morton With the exception of rose champagne replacing the port and malt whisky, the Ladies menu was the same as that for the
Livery, and both groups then joined together in the Drawing room for a stirrup cup. There was a great deal of support for this new event, particularly so on the worst day of winter and is hoped that the lunch will become an annual event.

The Master with David Nathan-Maister, who has for many years specialised in all aspects of Absinthe production and history The Master opened the proceedings by introducing David and welcoming the Livery to the Distillers’ Room that has been fitted with display cabinets to house the Companies interesting artefacts. Just under forty liverymen and their wives attended and listened intently to David who delivered a fascinating lecture on the history and distillation of absinthe and was extremely generous in the wide range of samples he supplied for tasting.
The Investec Media Centre at Lords, which will be included in our tour of the ground During the past twelve months similar events have been organised included a visit to the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, the Physic Garden (down the road), absinthe talk and tasting, visit to the Crown Jewels, debates on alcohol abuse and the effects of global warming on the spirits industry. We really are intent on extending the social activities of the Company well beyond the traditional boundaries of our four main set-piece functions. So please do come along. When two or more Distillers are gathered together, we can assure you a great time is had by all! Any ideas for other events would be gratefully received either to the Master, the Clerk or a member of the Court. UNITED GUILDS SERVICE Members of the Court and Livery and their wives joined the Master and Wardens for the annual United Guilds service at St rd Paul’s Cathedral on Friday 23 March. The origins of this service go back to February 1943 when the Livery Companies and Guilds of the City of London met and decided to lift the spirits of the City following the Blitz during the th Second World War. Thursday 25 March, Lady Day, was selected as the date for the first service, being the first day of the year according to the Julian calendar.
A general view of the Distillers’ room at the WSET during David’s presentation Following the lecture we adjourned downstairs to the newly opened Hide wine bar for supper.
This year The Lord Mayor attended along with the Sheriffs and Court of Alderman and The Lord Bishop of London preached the sermon. Following the Service members of the Distillers Livery Company and their wives met at Brewers’ Hall for an excellent lunch.
And this was before the luncheon for this happy group! It’s all a lot of fun, with serious bits in between. HMS MONTROSE At the beginning of the year HMS Montrose was deployed to the Mediterranean to patrol with the NATO fleet, visiting a number of ports. The Captain has very kindly invited members of the Livery to fly out and meet the ship and spend a few days on board during a passage. Two such to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity were Past Master Bob Howell and his daughter liveryman Joanna. They joined the Montrose at Soudha Bay in Crete and spent five days and nights en route to Naples, via the Straits of Messina and the still active Stromboli volcano.
The Captain of HMS Montrose, Commodore Tony Watt, OBE escorts the Master’s Lady at the Installation dinner, where he was one of the principal guests. The entire ship’s company made Bob and Jo very welcome and took great pride and trouble in explaining all aspects of the ship’s operations. The overwhelming reaction from the visit was of the quality, commitment and professionalism of everyone they met. Just to give the reader a small insight as to that quality, the Operations Officer is a qualified barrister!
You will be interested to learn that HMS Montrose will be in th th London between 8 and 16 September 2007 providing host facilities for a military exhibition in London. We are hoping to arrange a reception on board, which will provide liverymen with a great opportunity to visit the ship and meet the Officers and ratings. Should you be interested in a similar experience, contact Court Assistant David Raines at david.raines@hna.uk.com A MESSAGE FROM IAN HARRIS, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, WINE & SPIRIT EDUCATION TRUST Past Master Bob Howell and liveryman daughter Joanna do their bit to ensure the defence of the realm! They experienced all aspects of the ship’s activities ranging from electronic warfare simulation to deck sports and included the firing of rifles and a machine gun. One evening they even ran a ship-wide quiz in front of a camera, which was fed to all the messes and the wardroom. The Officers Wardroom achieved a reasonably comfortable win, which helped to offset the drubbing they had received in the deck (or sometimes known as death) hockey the day before. The Professional Certificate in Spirits hits the 1,000 mark and spreads its international wings Since it's launch in 2003/4, the WSET Professional Certificate in Spirits has shown very healthy growth in the number of students taking the qualification. March 2007 saw the 1,000th student to take the qualification, resulting in a pass with distinction. The student was Scott Hunter, who works at Annex 3 Bar and Restaurant in Little Portland St, London W1. He was sponsored by Bacardi Martini and studied the course with Mark Ridgwell at Taste and Flavour, an Approved Provider of the WSET's spirits course. The international growth of the WSET Professional Certificate in Spirits continues, with the translation of the course materials into Greek already completed (the first course in Athens has taken place) and translation into German underway. Moving back to London, the WSET School in Bermondsey Street is putting on an evening course for the first time, giving Liverymen the opportunity to put their post Christmas evenings to good use - and plenty of advance notice, so no excuses!
The course will run in early 2008 on every Wednesday evening from 9th January to 27th February, between 6.30pm to 8.30pm. It will be held in the Distillers' Room at the WSET School near London Bridge, with a programme as follows: 9th January 16th January 23rd January 30th January 6th February 13th February 20th February 27th February Market overview, distillation methods and tasting technique Brandy Scotch whisky Other whiskey and rum Vodka & tequila Gin and flavoured spirits Liqueurs and fruit spirits, plus revision session Examination

LIVERY NEWS OBITUARY: Past Master Norman Burrough, CBE The Order of Bernard O’Higgins: Anthony Westnedge, OBE In recognition of his contribution towards promoting closer cooperation between Chile and the United Kingdom in politics, social and cultural affairs, Court Assistant Anthony Westnedge recently received one of the most senior decorations conferred on foreigners by the Chilean government. This Order was named after Bernardo O’Higgins, hero of the War of Independence with Imperial Spain. The son of Ambrosio O’Higgins, Marquis of Osorno, a Spanish officer from County Sligo and one time Viceroy of Peru, O’Higgins completed his education in London and in 1817 went on to become the first effective leader of independent Chile. Under the command of Lord Cochrane, he organised the Chilean Navy that today maintains a close relationship with the Royal Navy. The association between O’Higgins and this country was recognised by the naming of a square after him in Richmondupon-Thames and the placing of a blue plaque on the outside of the house where he lived during his studies those many years ago. Norman Burrough was a real Distiller and a superb technician with an extraordinary knowledge of gin production. After service in the Coldstream Guards, in 1947 he joined his brother Alan in the family company and became responsible for production, learning his trade from his elder cousin Eric. The Burroughs Company during the post war years had 30 employees operating from their distillery in Lambeth, a winery in Brixton and a bonded warehouse in Camberwell. During the 1950’s Beefeater production grew rapidly and Norman persuaded the board to expand by buying the enormous Hayward’s Military Pickle factory next to the Oval. Very soon he had to add a new office block and make plans for increased bottling and storage. In the spring of 1970 the Company finally was located under one roof and the workforce had grown to 500. Norman travelled the world and during an era of import restrictions he arranged for Beefeater to be produced in a number of countries. In 1982 Norman took over the duties of Chairman. Norman was very active outside the Company joining the Worshipful Company of Distillers and becoming Master in 1988. A leading figure in the Gin Rectifiers Association, Norman became involved with European legislation and championed the formation of the Wine & Spirit Security Liaison Group. In 1985 Norman was appointed CBE and in 1986 an offer to purchase the Company proved too tempting and Whitbread took control. Norman retired in 1989 but remained actively involved in our Company, including serving on the Past Masters committee, until his death last autumn.
Marathon du Medoc on Sunday 8 September 2007. His charity is the Wine and Spirit Trades’ Benevolent fund, a cause very close to all our hearts. He is obviously seeking as much support as possible. He describes the course as kind, as the Medoc is not known for its hills. However, he writes, from previous participants he has learnt that the regions rolling gravel banks can get tiring, 0 particularly in 30 C heat. The positive side is that the course passes some 20 wineries and chateau, including Latour, Lafite and Mouton-Rothschild. At the refreshment stops you have to decide between water and the wine of the chateau. With oyster stops included, we suspect this almost has a rating for a double marathon! Good luck Rupert and anyone wishing to sponsor him should forward a cheque (payable to the Wine and Sprit Trades’ Benevolent Society) to: Rupert Pritchard, Taurus Wines, Whipley Manor, Bramley, Guildford, Surrey GU5 0LL

COMPANY TIES Two new designs of the Livery tie are proving very popular. The “City” tie is dark blue with Cambridge blue diagonal stripes with the Company’s crest at the bottom. The other is regarded as the Company’s “country” tie and is particularly striking with Cambridge blue and yellow diagonal stripes. Each cost £20 although the two can be secured for the bargain price of £30 from the Clerk’s office. All profits go to the Company’s charity fund.
