Golfing Results for 2009
Matches against the Vintners and the Brewers yielded encouraging results, halving a closely-fought match with the Brewers, but winning well against the Vintners . We achieved a very creditable 17th place out of 55 teams in the annual Prince Arthur Cup competition for City of London Livery Companies.
Golf day 2009
Since moving to the splendid West Kent Golf Club in 2007 some twenty five members have taken part in our annual golf days, unfortunately not all at the same time, as business and personal matters have had to take priority.
Notwithstanding, fifteen players made up this years field , and, following most excellent bacon butties and coffee, took to the sun drenched fairways( rough and trees!) in the best of spirits, it being our Distillers day after all.
There is a concern amongst some on our golfers’ mailing list that the standard is such that they believe they would be embarrassed were they to attend. Nothing could be further from the truth, for while we expect players to have a club handicap its level is in no way important , nor as is testified by those who take part is it an impediment to the enjoyment of the day, which apart from the golf itself provides an opportunity in a relatively small group to get better acquainted with fellow Liverymen. This year the handicap range was 14 to 25 and the stableford points score range was 20 to 38, with nobody needing in any way to feel embarrassed as scores are not published at the lower end.
This year’s winner of The Budge Brook’s Shield with 38 points was Paul Hobson off a handicap of 24. He is to be congratulated on a fine effort and dismissed suggestions that he was in any way advantaged by the fact that both his Mother, Valerie, and Father, Robert, had been captains of West Kent in their time.
Paul Varney and Clive Parry with 35 points were in second place. The team prize, with all scores counting was won convincingly by the team of defending champion, Sir George Bull, Paul Hobson and Paul Varney
The golf day next year 2010 will again be held at West Kent Golf Club on Friday 18th June, 2010
