On Tuesday 12th October 2021, the Distillers and Vintners came together for the annual Vintage Festival. Unfortunately, the Master Vintners’ husband had tested positive for Covid the previous day, with the result that she had to self-isolate and therefore could not be in attendance. Instead, Edward Berry, the Vintners’ Upper Warden, stood in as Master Vintner locum tenens.
Major Steve Marcham led the Master Distiller and Vintners’ Upper Warden, followed by our own Wardens Chris Porter and Lorne Mackillop, into St. James Garlickhythe, where the service was officiated by the Vintners’ Chaplain, Canon Mark Oakley. After some rousing hymns (including that harvest favourite, We Plough the Fields and Scatter) and a thought-provoking sermon, we reconvened at Vintners’ Hall for a champagne reception, followed by a 3-course lunch (which was served with fine wines, port and brandy). Past Master Sam Dow, the most senior Vintner present, gave a short speech of welcome.
All in all, a most convivial event – and wonderful to be back with the Vintners at our spiritual home.
