The Spirited Walking Tour of London – 350 Years of History

5pm, 12th October 2022

In honour of the Worshipful Company of Distiller’s 350th Anniversary and The Master’s Anniversary Appeal, award-winning drinks historians Anistatia Miller and Jared Brown are conducting a charity Spirited Walk of London’s West End that traces the rich history of the capital’s distilling trade. From its rise in apothecary shops, and the formal granting of our Livery in 1672. Along the way the tour will take you to the significant spots where the City’s sippers enjoyed the pleasures of drinking spirits from the seventeenth century to the present day.

Map of the walking route

This walking tour will highlight London’s distilling history, from St James to St Giles, starting at the home of Livery co-founder Sir William Brouncker as well as the location of London’s first blended whisky merchant Justerini & Brooks. The walk wends its way to one of the last surviving ‘gin palaces’ of Dickens’ Day and the birthplace of punch jellies and ice cream cocktails, to St Martin’s in the Fields, the final resting place of our Livery founder Sir Theodore Turquet de Mayerne.

St Martins in the Fields 1726

Other spirited places will include the location of the first icehouse that contributed to the birth of “American-style” cocktails in London, and an 18th-century coffee-house that housed its own distiller’s shop. We finish at the infamous St Giles rookery, in Hogarth’s Gin Lane.

The 1.5h walk will of course make a couple of pit stops for refreshments and conversation.

Tickets cost £35, which includes the tour guides, and three tastings along the way.

The Master hopes that you can join in this unique opportunity to learn about London’s distilling history. Bring a friend (over 18yo), meet new people, and help raise funds for the 350th Anniversary Appeal and our Charities. It will be a truly fascinating journey through the history and origins of our Worshipful Company and our grateful thanks go to Jared and Anistatia.
