City Food & Drink Lecture 2023

A goodly number of Distillers, led by the Master, attended the City Food & Drink Lecture at the Guildhall on the 15th May.

This was the first year that the Distillers have joined with seven food liveries to support the Lecture (which was previously known as the City Food Lecture). At the pre-lecture reception in the Old Library, HRH The Princess Royal was presented to the representatives of the eight Liveries and she had a particularly interesting exchange with our own Master.

Thereafter, almost seven hundred people filed into the great hall to listen to Keynote speaker Sir Charles Godfray, Director of Oxford Martin School, discussing the brutal realities of the “shifting challenges in building a just, healthy and sustainable food and drink system”.

After the lecture, there was a lively Q&A session chaired by journalist Charlotte Smith, with a panel consisting of Sir Charles, Sue Davies from Which, Wilfred Emmanuel Jones (better known as the Black Farmer) and Sophie Lawrence from Rathbones. However, for many of us, the highlight of the evening was the closing summary and remarks given by HRH, delivered in her inimitable concise and pithy style.

The City Food & Drink Lecture is very keen to publicise the lecture and a video recording – including comments from sponsors and Distillers as new members – is being edited and will be posted when available.

Next year’s lecture will be on the 11th March 2024 and we look forward to seeing many more Distillers’ liverymen in the audience.
