My Last Day As Master – Master’s Blog

Just when you think it is all over, suddenly there is a flare of activity the day before the installation of the new Master. At 8am we were both in the Mercers Hall taking part in the inter-livery initiative to propose a charitable mission that all Liveries could take part in if they wish. There […]

Master’s Blog – Remembrance Week

Remembrance Week One of the pleasures of being Master (and there are many) is being part of some national events as a participant rather than an observer. It’s Remembrance week in November and we are in the churchyard of St Paul’s Cathedral at the very hour and day of the second battle of Paschendale exactly […]

Basel and the Guild of Wine producers

Basel is a city which you probably feel you know something about but may well never have been to before. Perhaps that will change as we now have a relationship with a Guild of Wine producers, the EE Zunft zu Rebleuten (literally The Honourable Guild of Vine-Men) and I spent an interesting weekend there exploring […]

Motoring in the Highlands – Master’s Blog

It’s September and Scotland calls. With the promise of good weather and fine roads I joined the rally charity organised by Liverymen Peter Mackay and Alex Bruce. They had come up with the brilliant idea of a drive through some of the most beautiful back roads from the Dumfries border to Speyside and back to […]

An Exciting Evening at The Mansion House

The Gin Guild Installation in the Mansion House preceded the WCD Mansion House Banquet on October 12. It has been a great honour and privilege to have been Grand Rectifier of the Gin Guild for the last two years, during a period of exceptional growth for the Gin category, both at home and abroad. The […]

Car Club visit to The Cotswolds

It has long been an ambition of mine to have the Car Club come down to our adopted home in the Cotswolds and at last a break-through occurred to enable this and to make the visit particularly special. The area is blessed with a number of rare and famous car collections and after some months […]

The Scottish Charity Distillery Tour 2017

On a bright blustery day in early September, ten crews consisting of a Distiller and consort gathered at the historic and newly restored distillery of Annandale in the borders, for the start of a unique tour of new, restored and lesser known distilleries the length and breadth of Scotland. The brainchild of Liverymen Peter Mackay […]

A Trip To Savour – Jenever Masterclass in Schiedam

The Master with the support of Past Master David Raines organized a three day visit to Schiedam (Netherlands), at the end of June, the purpose of which was to experience and understand Jenever, the traditional Dutch spirit which had been the origin of and the inspiration for English Gin. The concept of an international masterclass […]

Livery Life Rushes On – Master’s Blog

This is traditionally the month of rest for the busy Master and Clerk’s team. Well, like the football season, which hardly seems to have finished before it starts again, the Livery world scarcely seems to stop as it used to. So early August saw me on a train to Windsor and a tasting at the […]

Doggetts Coat and Badge Race

The sun god is without question in the ascendancy this year, as we weaved this fun day out on the Thames through the complex of rainy fronts and found a day’s worth of glorious sunny weather. Cannily deciding to lead rather than follow the scullers in order to have a chance of seeing their tiny […]

Flaming June – Master’s Blog

Flaming June has lived up to its reputation. Coming in with a week of really rainy cold weather as it often does (remember D-Day) it then turns to the blistering hot conditions which we had through much of the month. There is, though, nothing so nice as a cup of tea in polite company even […]

Court visit to Rheingau and Mosel Valley 2017

The Court has not travelled to Germany in the 27 years of its tradition of visiting famous wine and spirit regions once per year, so it was time to put that right. Germany’s wine reputation suffered in the 70s as they imported low quality sweet wines and rather destroyed the market position that they had […]

Car Club visit to Copper Rivet Distillery

What do Bob, Ann, Matthew, Joyce, Janet, and Sandy have in common? To find the answer, find a straight flying crow and send it 30.999 miles due east of the City of London to the banks of the river Medway. As it hovers above Upnor Castle it will see on the opposite bank of the […]

The Darling Buds of May

As we surveyed the emergent grape clusters in the Rhine Valley we were informed that this year so far was frost free, unlike previous years, so optimism abounds. But I digress and since Easter, time has just flown by. The month started well with the Gin Guild induction and dinner in its new venue of […]

Spirits in 2367?

Our military affiliations with the Navy, the Fleet Air Arm and the Army provide us with the opportunity to learn what it is like to work in the services and understand the vital role they play in the defence of the nation. It has long been my ambition to complete the set with a relationship […]
