    Governance and peopleCourt of Assistants

    The Court of Assistants is the governing body of the Distillers’ Company. It brings together the Master, three Wardens and Assistants to provide oversight, make decisions and protect the Company’s long-term interests.

    The role of the Court

    The Court is responsible for:

    • setting and reviewing the Company’s strategy;
    • overseeing governance, finance and risk;
    • electing the Master and Wardens;
    • approving appointments and admissions;
    • receiving recommendations from committees;
    • safeguarding the Company’s charters, traditions and assets; and
    • continuing to deliver public value through its industry, educational, civic and charitable work.

    The Master presides over meetings. The Clerk is principal adviser to the Master and Court and supports the formal administration of its decisions.

    A tradition of service

    1. Liveryman — an active member of the Company, able to contribute to its committees, events and wider work.

    2. Steward — a member entrusted with additional service and responsibility within Company life.

    3. Court Assistant — a member appointed to contribute to the Company’s governance and long-term direction.

    4. Warden — a senior officer supporting the Master and preparing for greater leadership responsibility.

    5. Master — the Company’s chair and principal representative for the year.

    Progression is not automatic. Appointments are based on sustained contribution, judgement, engagement and the needs of the Company.
