    AboutGovernance and people

The Distillers’ Company is governed by its Court of Assistants, led by the Master and three Wardens and supported by the Clerk’s Office and a network of member-led committees.

    How the Company is governed

This structure combines accountability with the time and expertise of members who volunteer to help the Company fulfil its purpose.

Under the Company’s charters, the Court of Assistants is its governing body. The Court agrees strategy, oversees the Company’s affairs and elects the Master and Wardens each year.

The Master chairs the Court and is the Company’s principal representative. The Wardens support the Master and take on increasing responsibility as they progress through the senior offices. The Clerk is the Company’s senior permanent officer and advises the Master and Court while leading day-to-day administration through the Clerk’s Office.

Committees bring together members with relevant knowledge and interests. They develop and deliver work across areas including industry engagement, membership, education, communications, charitable relationships, affiliations and Company life.

The Court of Assistants is the principal governing body. The Master and three Wardens sit within the Court. Committees sit below the Court and report to it. The Clerk’s Office sits alongside and advises and enables rather than governs. The Distillers’ Charity is a related organisation connected by a non-directional relationship with no reporting line.

    Continuity and renewal

Senior offices are held for a defined Company year, which creates a regular rhythm of renewal. Each Master brings a distinct perspective while working within a structure that preserves continuity, collective memory and long-term purpose.

Past Masters remain an important source of knowledge and service. Their experience supports succession, mentoring and the Company’s ability to evolve without losing its character.
